Leaves are falling, and bonfire season is here. Please refer to the DEC regulations regarding open fires.
Some residents have expressed concern about open fires on Grand Island. Please be aware that the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regulates open burning in New York State. More information can be found online at http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/58519.html.
In short, campfires of clean wood or charcoal under three feet tall and four feet wide are permitted from May 15 to March 15. The burning of leaves or other waste, however, is not permitted anywhere in New York State. Composting leaves is encouraged.
These regulations are created and enforced by the DEC, not by the Town of Grand Island. Please contact the DEC with questions or concerns.
